Earlier this spring we wrapped up the fourth offering of the Housely Principled Leadership Program. Each semester there is always one student who demonstrates their complete commitment to the program – this semester was no different. During each of our seven sessions, Jamie Lahiere was vocal about the things she was wrestling with and open to the ideas of others. She asked hard questions and worked to custom fit the principles of the program into her own life and leadership practices.

For these reasons and many more, we were proud to award Jamie with the Housley Principled Leadership Award – a $1,500 scholarship.

When asked which sessions were her favorite, Jamie had a hard time narrowing it down. She enjoyed the introspective aspects of each session – especially session six on living a life of meaning. “It (Housley) opened my eyes to what it means to live a life of meaning and inspired me to pursue a vision that will transform my ideals and passions into a life-long mission,” Lahiere said.

“It was a pleasure having Jamie participate in our program because she helped further the dialogue during each session. Her commitment and dedication to the principles we discuss is the best way to honor the program’s namesake and my dear friend, Kevin Housley. We are very excited to see what Jamie is able to accomplish in the next few years,” said Bill Poston, President of the Stelos Alliance and one of the program’s facilitators.

Upon receiving her scholarship, Jamie had this to say: “Being awarded the 2013 Housley Principled Leadership Award was a huge honor; I have never received a scholarship before. The award was really the icing on the cake of an incredible development experience.”

Jamie graduated from Texas State University this May with a degree in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies. Her plans after graduation are to continue developing her leadership skills and learning from the people around her. Jamie plans on utilizing the money from her scholarship to either invest in a start-up or fund a trip.

Whatever she chooses, Jamie is going to leave her mark. We are proud to have Jamie join the Stelos family.

On any given day in San Marcos, Texas you’re likely to see a young man riding his longboard down the hills of Texas State University’s campus. Ryan Elliott is not only an avid skateboarder, but a Californian, an honorary Texan, and a Housley Principled Leadership Scholar.

Ryan took part in the spring 2013 Housley Principled Leadership Program and was selected to receive one of three scholarship awards because of his demonstrated commitment to his own personal development and to the themes explored throughout the course.

Housley made me analyze not only myself, but my actions and their effect on others around me. I feel as if I’ve developed greatly as a leader – a development I hope to share with others as I move forward with my future endeavors,” said Elliott about his experiences in Housley.

Bill Poston, the president of the Stelos Alliance, had this to say about Ryan, “Ryan was not afraid to buy into the themes that we cover in Housley, but he also wasn’t afraid to push back. Having students come alive during our program is the greatest way we honor our friend Kevin, and Ryan definitely came alive.”

Upon receiving his scholarship Ryan had this to say, “I don’t get much financial support, so being awarded this scholarship makes me very proud of the work I put into Housley.”

One of Elliot’s proudest moments involving his leadership was creating his own organization: the Extreme Sports Club. The organization has since been renamed to the Adventure Club, through which Elliot and his members foster a sense of community through various outdoor activities. “Creating something that bears fruit is one of life’s greatest rewards,” said Elliot.

Following graduation, Ryan plans to move to Austin, Texas and begin working in the non-profit sector. His long term goal is to create a non-profit that provides international microloans and microfinance opportunities for leaders in developing countries. Elliott would like to give people the chance to change their own lives for the better, and he wants to see it happen on a global scale.

It was a pleasure having Ryan Elliott in our Housley program, and we expect great things from him. He is a Stelos Superstar.

A year ago we were proud to watch two alums of our Housley Principled Leadership Program elected as the Student Body President and Vice President of Texas State University: Nathan McDaniel and Alison Sibley.

One year later, we are again proud to see two Housley graduates inaugurated as Student Body President and Vice President; Vanessa Cortez and Edward Perez were sworn in last week as the new representatives of Texas State University’s 35,000 students.

Vanessa and Eddie ran with the slogan, “Bobcats for a Better Tomorrow” to signify their passion for the university and their goal to further improve Texas State. They took a strong stance during the campaign to begin a culture shift at the university – a shift that promotes pride, builds attendance at athletic events, and makes Texas State an even more desirable university.

“I am truly honored to be elected as the next student body president and I’m excited to serve the students as their voice to the administration,” said Cortez following her inauguration. “Housley made a large impact on my life and was the motivation I needed to run for this position. Housley not only helped me realize my potential but it continuously helps me fulfill my potential because it taught me the importance of taking initiative and being proactive. “

Just a few days after taking office, Cortez and Perez are already hard at work preparing for their term in office, from scheduling meetings with administrators to meeting with their newly elected senators. Edward Perez had this to say about his new responsibility: “I am very honored that the students at Texas State deemed me qualified to represent them. Running for office was a year long goal and I cannot wait to see what this upcoming year has in store for Vanessa and me. “

We are proud to see graduates of the Housley program continue to choose to accept the responsibilities of leadership; and we are proud to have Vanessa and Eddie as members of the Stelos family.
